Creating Space

One of my favorite drills is the one in the video below. When teaching young hitters about the connection to the ground, it is super important that they understand "Space." The outdated hitting teachings of "just throw your hands" have polluted the mindset & understanding of the most efficient move to the baseball. A powerful baseball swing needs equal space between the arms & hands, especially in the beginning of the swing. Space allows the core of the body to engage and become the engine of the swing. If our hands and arms take over the swing, the lower half becomes disengaged. The mini basketball is a great drill for players to understand & apply the space they need to keep the core engaged as they make their move to the ball.
